Blockchain and Music – ‘a retrospective crystal ball’

By 2015 the topic of Blockchain had begun to appear on the itinerary of most major music conferences around the world. It was clear at the time that very few people actually understood what it was never mind what it was capable of and the discussions themselves were very technical. Being too technical, (because it came from those people who were the only ones who understood it), it was a very difficult message to get across and the relationship between blockchain and music was already beginning to wane before it had even started.

the music industry are burying their heads in the sand..

To summarise where blockchain was at that time in relation to the music industry; the technology was the perfect partner for solving the royalty payment and rights issues but the industry scoffed and refused to accept that blockchain would be the ‘saviour’ of an industry still dedicated to it’s antiquated tools and processes that are unfit for purpose, and so many had tried before.  Alas, as it was once so poetically pronounced, ‘he’s not the saviour, he is a naughty little boy’.

We had reached an impasse.

Six years on the world is a very different place, technology is moving at a frightening pace, and people who are in despair of society running to towards a cliff are changing the way they want to interact, not only with each other but also with technology.

Six years on the world is a very different place, technology is moving at a frightening pace, and people who are in despair of society running to towards a cliff are changing the way they want to interact, not only with each other but also with technology.

Social media has become such a monster people are looking elsewhere for their connections, their support networks and even their news. They are looking inwards again to their communities, the URBAN life connecting with creative people, people who have similar interests to themselves, similar passions and they want to create new experiences and share those experiences directly.

Operating as equals, creativity is taking on its own PERSONA amongst dedicated communities and they will not be bullied or exploited by the so called super-powers any more.

Blockchain is the perfect vehicle for sharing value amongst equals and the possibilities of what this technology can do are only limited to our imaginations. The world must prepare for the ORIGIN of change because the technology is already here to support it.

The music industry, meanwhile, is starting to listen and are open to these conversations again. Maybe now they will wake up to the possibility of actually being the trend setter, the trail blazers they once were way back in the day, and decide not continue down the path of the ostrich with its head in the sand.
