The Blockpool consensus algorithm

The Blockpool blockchain uses a Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) consensus algorithm to reward BPL holders and help ensure the stability of the chain.

The DPoS algorithm was developed as an energy efficient alternative to the hardware and energy intensive Proof of Work (PoW) such as Bitcoin and Proof of Stake chains that have a potential for malicious stakeholders to unduly influence the blockchain.

Any individual can host a node on the BPL network. The more held BPL (stake) that is voting for a BPL node, the higher it ranks on the list and only the top 201 of these nodes (delegates) generate rewards for processing the chain. This places the control over which nodes process the chain in the hands of those who have the most to gain from continued stability.

This also provides an opportunity for individuals to profit from holding BPL - either by applying their virtual hardware to the Blockpool blockchain or by voting for a "pool" that returns a portion of the rewards to their voters.
